Getting a same-day GP appointment in Port Stephens

Some things cannot wait until next week: a fever that will not settle, an ear that kept a child up all night, a chest infection starting before a weekend away. A few habits make a same-day spot much more likely.

Everyday care — Salamander Bay Doctors

The short version

  • Ring (02) 4008 4400 when the phones open. Same-day appointments are released in the morning.
  • Check HotDoc through the day. Cancellations go straight back online.
  • Tell reception briefly what is going on, so they can judge how soon you need to be seen.
  • Be willing to see any available GP. Every doctor here reads the same notes.

Salamander Bay Doctors holds back a set of appointments each day for people who need to be seen that day. They go quickly, and how you ask makes a real difference.

Ring early

Phones open at 8:30am on weekdays and 9:00am on weekends. Ringing first thing gives you the best chance of a spot, and if the morning is full, reception can tell you whether later appointments are likely.

Keep an eye on HotDoc

People cancel through the day, and those times go straight back onto HotDoc. Checking a few times through the day often turns up a cancellation, and you can book it straight away without waiting on the phone.

Say what is going on

Reception are not gatekeeping when they ask what the appointment is for. A short description lets them tell the difference between something that should be seen today and something that can safely wait, and it means the right length of appointment is booked.

Take any doctor

Holding out for your usual GP is the most common reason a same-day request does not work out. For a one-off illness, any of our GPs can see you, and your file is in front of them. Continuity matters most for ongoing care, and you can book your usual GP for the follow-up.
